Why Games can be Effective Pedagogy?

The function of education, therefore, is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically.” Dr. Martin Luther King Pondering the mandate of education is a popular sport, with pundits forwarding diverse views, but most agree on the basics: the role of education is to prepare the student for participation in society by presenting essential information, and guiding expertise in foundational skills.     The thing is, society is constantly evolving. Looking through the lens of technological progress, we’ve witnessed some massive changes from the norms of the last century. In a few decades, we’ve gone from assembly line factory jobs and vacuum tube powered, room-sized computers, to the lightning fast interactivity of the digital world that is transforming every sector, including schools. Dealing with the differences created by the march of progress is nothing new. 3000 years ago, Heraclitus quipped that ‘The only thing that is constant is change’, which serves t...

Why is education important and how does it affect one’s future? Oct 13, 2021 The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child recognizes education as a legal right of every child. Yet education remains a privilege to many. UNESCO data shows that 258 million children and youth were out of school for the school year ending in 2018. Of that total, more than 129 million were girls and 58 million were of primary school age.    Among those fortunate to have access to education, on the other hand, more than 617 million children and adolescents do not have minimum proficiency levels in reading and mathematics. 1. It is also where a person: develops skills essential to daily living, learns social norms, develops judgment and reasoning, and learns how to discern right from wrong. The ultimate goal of education is to help an individual navigate life and c...
SEGUNDA PRUEBA PARCIAL 2022 ESTUDIANTES: SILVIA BORGES, ALMA VIGNOLA PROFA. MARÍA GABRIELA BRITOS IFD Canelones Juan Amos Comenio Octubre 2022  CRITICAL PEDAGOGY, WHAT IS IT? Critical pedagogy is becoming more and more discussed by teachers. But what is it? According to the academia, critical pedagogy is a “philosophy of education that has developed and applied concepts from critical theory” (Kincheloe, 1997), “It views teaching as an inherently political act, reject the neutrality of knowledge, and insist that issues of social justice and democracy itself are not distinct from acts of teaching and learning” (Giroux 2007). So critical pedagogy is a philosophy of education that views teaching as a political act. This of course includes challenging students to examine the power structures and status quo of their surroundings. The oft-cited example is the film Dead Poets Society, where a teacher encourages students to rip up their textbooks. The film is set at a traditional uni...

The Benefits of Arts Education for K-12 Students While arts programs often fall victim to budget cuts, they can be an important contributor to students' success at school. By Andrew Warner   Aug. 30, 2022, at 4:55 p.m.     Your child’s art class involves a lot more than just the Crayola marker scribble-scrabble that will end up hanging on your refrigerator. “Good arts education is not about the product,” says Jamie Kasper, director of the Arts Education Partnership and a former music teacher. “It is about the process of learning.” Policymakers, school administrators and parents alike may overlook the significance of arts education, but these programs can be a crucial component of your child’s school life. Whether they're practicing lines for a school play or cutting up magazine scraps for a collage, children can use art to tap into their creative side and hone skills that might not be the focus of other content areas, including communication, fine motor skills and...
